Director of Business Development & Revenue Generation

Hamilton

About the Role

St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) is one of Canada’s largest health care organizations, with more than 8,000 staff serving a population of over two million people across five cities.

Its member organizations provide care and services across a broad continuum, including acute and complex hospital care, long-term care, home and community care, rehabilitation, hospice and palliative care, mental health and addictions, research, education and community outreach.

Guided by its mission of Unstoppable Compassion, SJHS is focused on finding new ways to collaborate, innovate and build sustainable models that strengthen care and the communities it serves.

The Opportunity

SJHS is seeking a Director, Business Development & Revenue Generation to establish a new system-wide capability focused on creating sustainable new revenue sources.

Based in Hamilton and reporting to the Executive Vice President, Infrastructure and Support Services and Chief Development Officer, the Director will work across SJHS to identify where there is real strategic and financial potential, bring discipline to how opportunities are evaluated and advanced, and move the strongest toward sustainable results.

Opportunities could range from expanding or commercializing existing capabilities to developing new services, partnerships, business models and other innovative sources of revenue.

This is not a traditional business development or strategy role. The Director will operate at the intersection of strategy, commercial development and execution - combining strong business and financial acumen with the ability to build relationships, influence stakeholders and turn ideas into action.

Key Responsibilities

- Build relationships across SJHS to identify existing capabilities, services, assets and ideas with commercial potential, while proactively identifying new opportunities through market and industry insight.

- Develop and maintain a disciplined pipeline, prioritizing opportunities with the strongest strategic and financial potential.

- Lead commercial assessment and business case development, including market analysis, financial modelling, ROI, break-even, feasibility, scalability and risk.

-Translate analysis into clear recommendations that enable leadership to make informed investment decisions.

- Identify and develop external partnerships across healthcare, industry, academia and other sectors.

- Build alignment across executive, clinical, operational and corporate stakeholders to move approved opportunities forward.

- Remain actively involved through early implementation and operationalization, transitioning mature initiatives to appropriate operational ownership.

- Partner closely with Finance, Research, Foundations and other functions across SJHS.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a commercially minded, entrepreneurial business leader with a track record of identifying opportunities and turning them into measurable business and financial results. They will bring meaningful experience in or alongside healthcare, with success developing new businesses, services, partnerships or commercial initiatives from initial concept and business case through approval and execution.

Their experience may come from private-sector healthcare or span both private and public environments. They will understand healthcare complexities and bring the judgment to balance commercial opportunity with organizational realities, diverse stakeholders and a mission-driven environment.

The successful candidate will bring:

- 5–7+ years of progressive experience in business development, strategy, commercialization, partnerships or a related discipline.

- A demonstrated track record of developing opportunities that have generated new business, revenue and bottom-line return.

- Strong business and financial acumen, including financial modelling and business case development.

- Knowledge of the healthcare sector, its stakeholders and operating environment.

- Strong relationship-building, influencing and negotiation skills, with the ability to navigate complex organizations and governance.

- An entrepreneurial, hands-on approach and comfort building something new.

- Strong communication and executive presence, with the ability to engage executive, clinical, operational and external stakeholders.

- A genuine interest in applying commercial experience to healthcare and public purpose.

- A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Health Administration or a related field; a Master’s degree is considered an asset.

Why SJHS?

This is a rare opportunity to build a new capability across a health system with significant breadth, scale and executive support. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of healthcare services and capabilities, with direct exposure to senior leadership and the ability to shape how SJHS approaches revenue generation over the long term.

Most importantly, new revenue has a clear purpose: creating greater capacity for SJHS to invest in innovation, expand services, improve access to care and strengthen the health of the communities it serves.
